The SALTECH desalination range consists of seawater reverse osmosis desalination systems. These systems are a comprehensive range of standard and customised products developed and manufactured in South Africa. They are based on the reverse osmosis process, which has been under constant development since the introduction of the first experimental systems in the 1950s.
In simple terms, reverse osmosis is a “reverse process” that utilises the natural osmotic pressure difference between two salt solutions on either side of a membrane. Mechanical pressure is applied to the side with higher salinity.
The RO membranes play a vital role in the desalination system by separating the fresh water from the “salty” or undesired water, which passes through them at relatively high pressure.
